2012 Meetings and Events

Brooklin Horticultural Society holds its meetings on the 4th Wednesday of each month (see list below) with the exception of January, July and December. Hear a presentation, win raffles, show off your gardens' results, and socialize with novice and master gardeners while you have a coffee and a snack! Meetings are open to all. Meetings are usually held in Brooklin United Church Hall, Cassels Road East, in Brooklin, beginning at 7:30 p.m. sharp.

May Meeting

May 23rd    The Spring Show

Guest Speaker:  Marion Jarvie "The Jarvie Garden...Creating a Work of Art on a Suburban Lot".  Marion is a passionate plants woman who has an impressive, diverse garden on a suburban lot in Thornhill that makes use of every bit of ground. She provides design tips and plant, shrub and tree recommendations, as she shares her passion and knowledge.  Marion is an accomplished photographer and enthusiastic lecturer. Her appearance is co-sponsored by the Brooklin Horticultural Society and Whitby in Bloom.

Following Marion's presentation, Sophie Bigham will once again update the Society on "What's New for 2012", highlighting a few of the new cultivars available this year.

This month's meeting will also feature tulips, irises, narcissus, lilac branches, vegetables, orchids, floral designs and more in the annual "Spring Show" member competition.

Show Information

Since one of the purposes of the society is to encourage the production of high quality plant and flower products, shows are held each month from April to October (except July). These flower shows give members a chance to exhibit new varieties, uncommon plants, and creative arrangements. The shows are also an opportunity to be judged by experts on the merits of our everyday garden variety flowers and vegetables. Much can be learned from the judge's comments. Our flower shows are open to all members in good standing. Winners are eligible for prize points which earn monetary value, and can win some of the numerous society awards and trophies given for various best-of-show entries throughout the year.
